Doodling In Pen

Sometimes doodling helps one focus. These were made to keep my hands busy while listening and thinking in church. A pen and a pad of paper can indeed help fill a need in life.

I used three different small pages to doodle here. They have been scanned in together after cutting them out to shape. (If you look closely you might see the scissor lines.)

Biscuit In Pen

This is my dog, Biscuit. This is just a pen doodle on copy paper.

Doodles are fun and non-pressured ways to draw. One doesn’t expect an ever-so-amazing outcome. So, regardless if it looks great in the end or not, you just don’t stress over it! I didn’t waste good paper and the medium was a basic writing style pen.

Mandy in Color

This is a drawing in colored pencil of my person pup, Mandy. She turned ~10 in this year (2024). She was a mutt adopted in 2015 and has become a therapy dog who goes into assisted living facilities, church, etc. with me.

Colored pencil has been an on and off challenge for me. Sometimes my brain cannot connect how to turn my refence photo into a hand draw piece of art. Other times all turns out okay, but if the piece isn’t sprayed with some sort of fixative the artwork gets ‘wax clouding’ – this is where the wax of the colored pencil seems to float to the top of the drawing and creates a white film above the colored work.

I do like how this piece of Mandy turned out. My style in the medium of colored pencil seems to give off a pearlescent feel to me. Look below to see what you think!

Roar

This is a pastel chalk drawing of a lion. It was drawn on 11×14 inch paper.

One of the unique things I use in my pastel drawings are pastel pencils. When sharped, these allow me to recreate the fine hairs and whiskers etc. that I see in my reference photo.

Please enjoy the drawing below, but don’t get frightened by the “ROAR!”

Pup

This is a young dog depicted in gouache watercolor paint on paper. I first took and drew the outline with a mechanical pencil and then finished with the paint.

Grazing

This is a graphite pencil drawing of a horse. It is drawn on 11 by 14 inch paper.

The tools used were a:

mechanical pencil with HB (normal hardness) graphite for the details
softer graphite stick for the dark shadows
mechanical eraser to make the whites in the body hairs and the lighter shades of the horse’s mane
a couple different sizes of blending stumps to smooth out otherwise rough lines and to make the distant pieces of grass fade into the background

This horse is enjoying a tasty treat, and without further ado – I present the art piece: Grazing
